The sun is always out in the Shire at the end of June. As I cleaned up some mess the other day I came across some old diaries and they brought back some memories. In 2003 I wasn’t training consistently as I graduated

“The race is like a bull fight. There are two ways to kill a bull for instance. There is the easy way for one. But all great Matadors end up dead or mauled becuase for them killing the bull is not nearly as important as how they kill the bull. They always approach the bull [...]

I need sleep, so quickly in a nutshell
Swim:
It’s the swim that causes the tension before the start. 95% of the athletes are thinking about making that first group. Everyone has the same focus and fears.
My swim went well but I was disappointed not to have more belief - I should have made the breakaway group as I was there at 750m. [...]

Day 3:
Look who I found in the hotel lobby - Dr Darren Smith - former Scottish National Coach and the name behind the famous Dazza 90/90 workout - 90 seconds on 90 seconds off, 60 on 60 off, 45/45, 30/30, 15/15 (some dude called Steve Monegetthi once tried to claim it was his sessions but [...]

Day 2:
It was a short run in terms of distance but it ended up taking 40mins - on every corner there was something that I had to slow down to look at. The White House, the Reflecting Pool (you know the one where Jenny runs through to get to Forrest Gump as he makes his speech [...]

Day 1
It would have been easier for me to get into Heaven past St Peter than onto the Continental flight at Edinburgh Airport. There was a lot of questions and peeping at me from around a curtain (!?).
When asked for the 3rd time in the space of 40mins
“Has anyone given you anything since you entered [...]

Those Goats are greedy buggers too - I can’t leave my carrots, celery and hummus down for fear they take off their bells and sneak in when I am asleep.
At the moment I have cut out a lot of the steady stuff and I am ’sleep loading’ in preparation for heading to Washington DC in the morning [...]

Fraser Cartmell hit the podium in UK 70.3 - there are rumours of a ‘code brown’ which I am sure will be cleaned up in his race report in the coming days.
Other triathlon team warriors were in action too

I just finished my run on Saturday afternoon and was stretching and checking out some of the Vintage cars that were parked outside of the Heythrop Park Hotel. 2 old pensioner magnets who looked liked extras from ‘the last of Summer Wine’ rocked up beside me with some fat cigars
“you wouldn’t happen to have a light Squire [...]

Is that the coolest dog you have ever seen or what !?
Its like a small bear . . . and now that I have met him he has gone straight in at number 3 on the “pets I’d love to have”. Number 2 is a Silver Back Gorilla and number 1 a big lazy Lion.
Can you [...]

“To Run like hell is to defy the logic of everyday man and to CHOOSE pain. The pain is not a means to success in some sensationalized sport event meant to market athletes and sell their talents to the masses. The pain IS the success. Once you prove that pain cannot dominate you, YOU can run [...]

Contrary to what I said on my twitter - this Tractor was not a prize in Triathy ! Maybe though something for the organisers to think about for next year.
Myself and Fraser Cartmell packed up and checked out of the Cartlon Hotel in Athy 3hrs late - admittedly it was more my fault than his [...]
