Dublin City Triathlon 2009

“They’re always after me Lucky Charms ! “
I raced the Dublin City Triathlon this morning.
I woke at 6am, wrapped on a scarf for the Irish Weather and poured myself a bowl of Lucky Charms . . . by 6.05am the sugar had my blood stream and I was ready !
It was not the usual choice of breakfast of an athlete 2hrs before kick off …. added to the mix was a banana (part of my 4 a day), some heavenly Nougat and a bottle of juice. My teeth took a real hammering.
Maybe my choices were a sign of a lack of motivation since Yokohama last week or maybe they were a sign of a ridiculous sugar craving after too much rice and fish. In fact I have had a real craving for crappy food in the past few days. In any case, the Lucky Charms went down a treat and, well, nougat is always a winner with me.
The race in Dublin was in its usual location in the Phoenix Park. A swim in the Liffey, a multi lap bike and a 2 lap run over the country to finish. I felt fine throughout, sort of knowing I had enough of a lead after a lap on the bike to concentrate more on “not feckin it up” more than anything.
As is now the norm in Ireland the race was a sell-out, the organisation once again of international standard and some of the racing very competitive. Itsallaboutclubbragginrights.
I received a lot of support along the way; my family came down and watched and I was home eating sausage sandwiches by noon. All good.
There was even enough time to head and watch the All Ireland Football Semi-Final between Meath and Kerry in the afternoon.
As have been my thoughts all week – I am not really sure what my plans are now .. no plans equal little structured training for a while, catching up with friends and family and all that goes with it . . .
If you can think of an inspiring event to do let me know . .
