Stellenbosch bubble
December 11th, 2009 by Gavin

Red, White, cheap date Rose, I don’t know much about wine but on my ride today I found a good one - it’s well branded at least !
On my past few rides my legs didn’t want to play, not even at 220 watts for an extended period. Today however they showed me some love. One of those days when your checking to see if the chain is still attached (!), the sun was out, my computer read 40 degrees in between the ditches and the Ostriches looked happy as I swung back for home.
It’s a strange little bubble here in Stellenbosch. My normal routine in the Shire is to get back from training, pile all sorts into my dog bowl and sit and watch BBC Bad News 24 - here though I haven’t a clue what’s happening in the real World. I had this discussion with my Physio this afternoon and he replied “when you live in paradise why would you give a shit about whats happening any where else?”.
“Fair enough”
On my ride today I thought about everything and nothing
Maybe some day ill stop at the cross roads and buy some of that fruit they have stolen.
Whats happening at home ? That brother of mine is giving me a real headache with this wedding speech
Why do the South Africans not seem to get excited about Christmas ? You go into a supermarket and you wouldn’t even realise Santa is getting ready to hit the streets.
I thought about my season past and my plans for the 2010 season
What, where, how and when ( I didn’t do well in that conversation with myself - but maybe after my secret trip next week to recon ’possible best camp ever 2 ‘ I can plan February and March at least )
Outside of my bubble and in the triathlon world a new website was launced at home -
I am sure it will be a great success and hopefully Triathlon Ireland will follow suit and update www.triathlonireland.com .
The rest of the Irish team are training in Spain at the moment (ROY , Picante ). I spent a lot of time in Aguilas, another bubble where you are shut off from the real world . . . . I loved it.
Ireland has also appointed it’s first CEO and Jag Gunawardana has moved on to pastures new. Jag has built TI to a stage when it has simply become too big for one man - which at the end of the day is absolutely great ! An often thankless job with everyone wanting a piece of his time - he did some amazing work in his ‘term in office” as President and he leaves Irish Triathlon with it’s strongest ever platform from which to progess. If you looked at Triathlon Ireland before he came to work for us (giving up his own time ) and where we are now you simply cannot argue with his record.
“the man who really counts in the world is the doer, not the mere critic- the man who actually does the work and not the man who only talks or writes about how it ought to be done.”
You said it Abe, thanks Jag
