The Stair test – failure = rest

Thats a lot of running ……

some are good to rock, some are old rockers, some are heading for the locker in the sky – playing them out is ‘Sinnerman’ on my blip.fm, my favourite training song . .

You know your tired when your in the changing rooms before hitting the track and you spend 10mins looking for your heart rate monitor – I emptied my bag twice, quietly cursed and tutted . . . . 15mins later just before the first 600m rep I took my long sleeve off and whilst fixing my shorts I felt the monitor strap around my waist . . . que more quiet cursing . . . .

You also know your tired when you fail the ‘Stair Test’ – this test involves walking up the stairs in your house and if theres a burning sensation in your legs you have failed ! I have a rest day tomorrow and I think I need it – although theres a swim in the morning thats it for the day – my body could soldier on but my mind is needing the break and for that reason my body will be thankful. Theres just enough day light left in today for several Green Tea’s and 1 last session – short jog, 10k tempo, cool down . . .

I commented on the phone last night that I got a bit dizzy / light headed on a recent run off the bike . I had to sit down for a bit and struggle home – a lack of food on the bike I think (lack of nougat !). We have all been there …. haven’t we ???

I was reminded that on one occasion I felt dizzy during a run session and ended up in hospital getting my heart re started. I was doing 300m repeats at the time – I went through 200m in 33 on course for another 51 seconds -

however it took me another 33 seconds to complete the last 100m !

I had that feeling you get when you walk up a flight of stairs, get to the top but think you have 1 more stair to go and you stumble . . . I had that for 100m I guess. I was the only soul on the track that day in the rain so no one witnessed my poor run technique over that last straight ! Absolutely disgusted with my time, I told myself to get a grip and hit the next 300m in the correct time (!) . . . . a couple of hours later I was in a hospital ward munching on some scrambled eggs.

Lying in the hospital theatre the next morning a young lady approached, asked was there charge in the paddles and then said with a smile - “dont worry its the second time I have done this “. I could feel the anesthetic running up my arm, the room began to spin and before I could process what she had just said I was in a happy place !

Triathlon training . . . sometimes its just not cricket
