Training Diaries 2003-2007

The sun is always out in the Shire at the end of June. As I cleaned up some mess the other day I came across some old diaries and they brought back some memories. In 2003 I wasn’t training consistently as I graduated

from Stirling University. I loved my time at Uni and trained as best I could alongside doing what you do as a student !

In 2004 I went with Irish Universities to Palma de Majorca and the World University Triathlon Champs – placing 10th in a race won by Filip Ospaly.

At the end of June in 2005 I raced for a US Vendome in the French Grand Prix – my diary entry reads

“21st and 5th team overall, manager was happy enough. Happy to be beside Poissy at the swim start and next to Vlad as I got towed around. Lacked urgency in transitons and lost 5 places in last 400m – must do better. Roomed with Vladimir Polykarpenko (spelling?). very professional. very single minded. Didn’t eat simple sugars. Runs like a cowboy but generates loads of power from hips. had decent banter for a Ukranian”

In 2006 I found myself in hospital with a heart problem which meant a bit of time off. My diary reads

“it took a lot of time to do that 300m, I woke up in hospital. Got heart stopped and restarted by a chick who looked younger than me – wasn’t impressed. Feel groggy. To do list: 1. call home 2. change training ”

In 2007 my diary entry was written in Copenhagen red light district:

“European Champs. Hotel room above a place called ‘Spunk Bar’. quite nosiey but feeling good”

All in all, good times
