World Championship Series Madrid

A ‘Pinchazo’ is one way to ruin your afternoon. 2 of them during the bike leg of the Madrid World Championship Series leaves you cursing, frustrated and cursing some more. Mala Suerte all around.

I will have to admit that even up to that point (or rock) I was not where I wanted to be. I had a clean start and found clear water quickly in the swim - but then I relaxed and that was a fatal error - there is no relaxing at a World Series event - something I am putting down to race rust. I lost a lot of places between 300 and 500m.

Coming out of the water at the back of a long line into T1 I mounted the bike with Daniel Unger, Tony Moulai, David Hauss, Rudi Wild etc . . . oridinarily that would be good enough with the pack little over 5 secs in front - but not on that day. We were all just as complacent, we all looked at each other and suddenly the train left the station with none of us aboard. Can I chalk that one up as race rust too or should I just ‘man up’ ?

Shoulda woulda coulda . . . a bit more aggression please.

And then the punctures

And then the lonliness

And then the should would coulda

And then the self doubt

And then the

“man up will ye ”

World Championship series - the train waits for no man, there is no room to relax, no room for error, no room for self doubt and certainly no coming back from 2 punctures (not even Mr Brownlee is that good . . .  but we cannot be sure)

Hi Gavin, was in Casa de Campo watching the race, and being a paddy in Madrid I was keeping an eye out for the Irish guy in the field, on the day I was wondering what happened as you seemed to disappear on the bike, dos pinchazos is definitly muy mala suerte. Better luck in your next race!
